The Medal is circular and made of cupro-nickel and measures 36 millimetres (1.4 inches) in diameter and has the recipient’s name is impressed on the rim: 'VX58241 K. G. THORSEN. Crowned effigy of King George VI and surrounded by the inscription ‘GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX ET INDIAE IMP‘ / Coat of arms of the Commonwealth of Australia surrounded by the words ‘THE AUSTRALIA SERVICE MEDAL 1939-1945’, the ribbon measures 32 millimetres (1.3 inches) wide and has a wide khaki central stripe (represents the Army), flanked by two narrow red stripes, the edge stripes are dark blue on the left and light blue on the right (representing the Mercantile Marine, Navy, and Air Force respectively). 32.74gr, 36mm
