Western Asiatic Style Stone Roundel Group
20TH CENTURY A.D.
2 1/8 - 3 3/8 in. (180 grams total, 54-85 mm).
Comprising: a round stone disc with a profile image of a roaring lion with inlaid eye; an agate disc with calligraphic decoration; a dark stone disc with low-relief vines and beast heads. [3, No Reserve]

From the family collection of a Hampstead gentleman; formerly acquired in the 1980s.

The scene represents the announcement made by the angel Gabriel to Mary, that she would conceive and bear a son through the Holy Spirit (according to the Gospel of Luke, I, 26-38). In some regional contexts it is called Conceptio Domini or Conceptio Christi. -
