Western Asiatic Haematite Cylinder Seal

3/4 in. (2.28 grams, 19 mm).
With frieze of standing robed figures, central figure wearing a headdress with cow horns and wielding an axe(?), an ankh behind him; before him a standing figure wearing long robes and a cow-horn headdress, holding a vessel in his hands and a snake(?) suspended around his neck, a small crouching figure between the two figures; behind a standing figure holding one hand up in adoration and wearing a tall conical headdress, holding a short staff in the other hand; supplied with a museum-quality impression.
ProvenanceFrom the 'S' collection, acquired 1970-1990s.
The collection was seen and studied by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993.

Cylinder with cord and bead handles; accompanied by a copy of an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Cylinder seal of hematitite [sic], 13 x 7 mm., worn but the design clear. Space filled with: lion, sphynx, bird, fish, quadruped with bird's head, star, sun, and sundry dots and shapes. Mitanni Elaborate Style, from the area between Kurdistan and the East Mediterranean, c. 1400-1200 B.C.'; supplied with a museum-quality impression. 2.63 grams, 12 mm
