Western Asiatic Gold Openwork Bead Pendant
CIRCA 1ST MILLENNIUM B.C. AND LATER
1 3/4 in. (1.78 grams, 45 mm).
Composed of two intersecting teardrop-shaped rings with plaited borders; two blue glass bead suspended from below with a granulated collar above; the decorative suspension loop with a granulated collar and an oblate carnelian bead.

Tightly-coiled wire band with graduated profile, domed disc closure with repoussé central boss and pellets to the rim, pendant formed as a rectangular frame enclosing two fusiform banded agate and another fusiform bead, barrel-shaped gold collars and coiled wire finials. 37.20 grams, 66 cm

From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000. From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.
The later (2nd -3rd century A.D.) Rabbinic tradition emphasised the difference between the permanent mortar (makhtesh kevua) and the movable one (makhtesh metaltelet), with the first being automatically sold with the house, but the second sold only if expressly stated by the vendor. This form of movable mortar was common in the Levant throughout the second half of the 1st millennium B.C.
