Western Asiatic Bronze Personal Seal Matrix for 'modda ibn Abdullah'
14TH CENTURY A.D.
5/8 in. (16.6 grams, 17 mm).
Comprising a domed body rising to a pierced suspension lug, underside with discoid plaque and reversed incuse Arabic legend: 'Modda ibn Abdullah', a personal name also serving as a religious expression roughly translating to, 'Don't be a slave to anyone but Allah'.

From the collection of a gentleman, acquired on the London art market in the 1990s.

West Central Asian Bronze Stamp Seal Matrix with Vulture
Circa 2300-2000 B.C.Sold for (Inc. bp): £208
Showing a vulture with spread wings, remains of loop to the reverse; accompanied by typed and signed note by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 34 x 8mm. This has the form of what is depicted, with flat face, flat back, and the remains of a handle of strip metal on the back. The design shows an eagle or vulture with head sideways at the top and wings spread each side, the talons at the bottom being chipped. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare type and in fair condition. Incrustation on the surface could be removed.' 10 grams, 37 mm
