INDIA, 19TH CENTURY A.D.

5 3/4 x 4 in. (5 grams, 14.8 x 10.3 cm).

Three bifacial manuscript pages, each with recto with multiple lines of text, verso with watercolour scene with panel of text above and below, including children being instructed in martial arts in a courtyard, riders playing Chovgan, and a warrior wearing a lion skin attacking a demon in a cave, whilst his horse looks on from above. [3, No Reserve]

Acquired on the UK art market, 1980s-1990s.

    Previously in the David Buxton collection (1910-2003), until the late 1990s.

    The scene should represent the miracle of the Virgin Mary to Damianus the scribe: Damianus wrote the name of the Virgin Mary with gold and silver instead of with common black ink. The Virgin Mary appeared to Damianus on his death bed and promises to write his name upon a pillar of gold in the Kingdom of Heaven.
