Viking Age Silver Thor's Hammer Pendant

9TH-10TH CENTURY A.D.

1 3/4 in. (7.73 grams, 47 mm high).

Composed of a loop with coiled wire section and twisted neck creating a smaller loop suspending a pendant formed as Thor's hammer, with coiled wire collar and triangular blade stamped with annulets. [No Reserve]

Private collection formed in Europe in the 1980s.
Ex Westminster collection, central London, UK.

    From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s.

    Pentagonal strap mounts decorated with schematic plant ornaments, cast in bronze, characterised the population of Volga Bulgars, often in commercial relations with the Viking world. A belt-set with pentagonal and rectangular mounts decorated with plant ornaments, along with its strap end and buckle, were excavated by V.D. Sokolov in Slavic-Scandinavian graves in Russian territory.
