Viking Age Scandinavian Silver Filigree Pendant

CIRCA 9TH-11TH CENTURY A.D.

1 3/4 in. (7.17 grams, 46 mm).

Discoid plate with integral suspension loop secured at the reverse, symmetrical design of applied silver granules and silver wire with granulated boss to the centre and radiating arms; braided wire rim. [No Reserve]

    The exact identity of the animals is disputed: on some examples, such as those from Birka published by Arbman, the animals have an ursine quality whereas the present ones look more like mice or squirrels.
