Viking Age Gold Cloisonné Animal-Shaped Pendant
CIRCA 9TH-11TH CENTURY A.D.
3/4 in. (0.53 grams, 20 mm).
Fragment with central area divided into three rectangular cells, D-shaped cell to the end and lateral triangle, irregular scoped cell above; probably from a larger cloisonné decorative item.

From a late Japanese specialist collector, 1970-2000s.

Acquired in the 1950s. Ex private collection, South West England.
On the Baltic island of Gotland, high-ranking females wore 'box' (or 'drum') brooches to secure their outer garments at the shoulders. The inner container may have been used to hold small valuables. -
