IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC P M THICO P M TR P COS VI P P (sic), radiate and draped bust to right / SENATVS POPVLVSQVE [ROMANVS], emperor standing facing, head to left, between two trophies; S C in exergue. RIC II 676 var. (obverse legend); BMCRE 1052-4 var. (same); Woytek 586v var. (same). Good Very Fine. Lightly smoothed and tooled, possibly resulting in variant in obverse legend.(14.12gr, 26mm, 6h.).

    Condition as seen. Casting mould sharing two reverse types.

    From the collection of a gentleman, acquired on the London art market in the 1990s.

    With an impression of the obverse on one side, and the reverse on the other, of the coin being counterfeited this ancient forger's casting mould would have been stacked with others, the molten metal being poured from above and allowed to cool.
