From Roma Numismatics' footnote: The murex shell symbol makes a punning allusion to the moneyer's name. The shells, found mainly around the southern Mediterranean coastline, were left to decompose and the purple ink which resulted was used to make purple dye. This dye was highly valued throughout the ancient world, and used in Rome to colour the senatorial togas. -

Pompeius Magnus to right; to left, capis; to right, lituus / [PRÆF] above, CLAS • ET • ORÆ MARIT • EX • S C (MAR ligate) in two lines beneath Neptune standing to left, holding aplustre in his right hand and resting his right foot on prow; to left and right, the Catanaean brothers Anapias and Amphinomus, with their parents on their shoulders, running in opposite directions.
