Thrace, Byzantion in alliance with Kalchedon AE 26mm. 300-200 BC.

Veiled and wreathed head of Demeter to right / ΒΥZΑN [Κ]ΑΛΧΑ, Poseidon seated to right on rock, holding aphlaston with right hand and transverse trident with left; ΠΑΡ monogram in inner right field. Schönert-Geiss 1271-1275; HGC 3.2, 1428. Good Very Fine.(10.90gr, 26mm, 12h.).

    The method of casting this unique type of coin was adopted by the Gallic Celts who originally came from this region. Dolphins were generally struck in the form of a tree attached to the tail, although some examples appear to have been cast individually.
