LOWER PALAEOLITHIC PERIOD, CIRCA 400,000-200,000 B.P.
6 in. (575 grams, 15 cm).
In light brown stone, of rounded profile with thickened butt; inked collection inscription to one side ' Smaïz', 'Reygasse' and 'Coll Mortillet 2154'. [No Reserve]

Believed to have been found in Reygasse, France.
Ex Collection Martillet, no.2154.
Collection of Mr François Bigot (1950-2009).
Accompanied by a copy of a French cultural export permit, no.231578.

A thick, hard hammer struck primary flake, the dorsal face steeply retouched on one side to form a single, long edge scraper or cutting edge; perhaps a unifacial segmental chopper of Type L ‘handaxe’' the extant cortex thin and weathered, now patchy grey in colour. 133 grams, 88 mm
