Sino-Tibetan Gilt Bronze Buddha Statue
20TH CENTURY A.D.
12 in. (2.7 kg, 30.5 cm).
Sitting nude on a lotus-flower base with openwork mandorla behind the tiered crown, bloom on the left arm curled around the wrist and two more emerging from the base bearing bodhisattva figures; hands in the teaching gesture (Dharmachakra Mudra), cabochon stud to the brow for the urna.

The name 'Budai' means 'cloth sack', which he is usually depicted carrying. He is traditionally depicted as a fat, bald monk wearing a simple robe, and his jolly nature distinguishes him from most Buddhist masters or figures. -

The Bixi is a mythical beast, one of the nine sons of the Dragon King. The domed carapace of the beast was believed to represent the vault of the heavens while its lower shell represented the earth; the living flesh within represented humankind. -
