Scythian Gold Repoussé Animal Mount
EARLY 1ST MILLENNIUM B.C.
7/8 in. (2 3/4 in.) (29.63 grams total, 22 mm wide (62 mm high including stand)).
Formed as an advancing lion, hatching to hips and shoulders; mounted on a custom-made stand.

From the Robin Symes Mayfair gallery before 1999, and part of a collection exhibited at the gallery.
Ex London, UK, collection.

Greek Inscribed Lead Slingshot

Biconical in profile with casting seam and reserved legend 'ΦΙΛ[.]VOC (PHILIPPOS)'. 35.8 grams, 30 mm
Acquired on the German art market before 2000. Private collection, Munich, Germany.
The leaden bullets, thrown with slings, were called in Greek molivdainai (μολύβδαιναι), and in Latin glandes; the former indicating the material ‘lead’, the latter the shape ‘acorns’. These bullets were cast in a mould and bore letters or devices, or both, on two sides or only on one. In form, they were more like an almond than an acorn, but many are pointed at both ends. -
