Scandinavian Viking Bronze Box Brooch
9TH-10TH CENTURY A.D.
2 1/8 in. (93 grams, 53 mm).
Featuring a squat cylindrical body, ornate cruciform motif to upper face, zoomorphic panels to the side wall; hollow-formed; remains of pin lug and catchplate to reverse.

Penannular brooches with facetted terminals were part of the famous Kostivere hoard, found in Estonia, deposited in around 1220-1230 during the wars of Estonians against the Germans and Danes. The annular brooches with animal ornament in Urnes style were considered by the archaeologists definitely Scandinavian, more specifically from Gotland. -

Comprising two short Baltic Prussian spearheads with lentoid-section lanceolate blade, short neck and tapering circular socket with single hole for attachment pin; remains of wood inside one of the shafts. 425 grams total, 26-28 cm
Acquired 1971-1972. From the collection of the vendor's father. Property of a London, UK, collector.
Prussian horsemen, like the Lithuanian and Livonian, were ‘light - armed’, as the Prussian documents say, yet their equipment, of sword and spear, helmet and even shirt of mail, was sufficient to enable them to hold their ground against the Teutonic forces. -

Of Type D, with fragmentary applied beaded wire border and ribbed suspension loop; the repoussé design a zoomorph with the body formed from looped tendrils; the head beneath the loop with C-shaped left-facing head outlined with pellets, crossbar and eye. 2.24 grams, 28 mm
Found whilst searching with a metal detector near Orsett, Essex, UK, in 2015. Recorded with the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) with reference no.ESS-4FF212. Disclaimed as treasure with reference number 2015 T471. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate no.200403.
