Saxon Bronze Sword Scabbard Pyramid Mount

CIRCA 6TH CENTURY A.D.

5/8 in. (4.76 grams, 17 mm).

Garnet inlay to top face and one side face, the latter with hatched foil backing and set against a white meerschaum(?) field; three cells empty; rectangular recess to the underside with a median bar. [No Reserve]

Acquired 1990s-early 2000s.
East Anglian private collection.

Footnotes

The mount had to slide on a strap as part of the suspension mechanism for the scabbard.

    Found near Droxford, Hampshire, UK. From an old Hampshire collection. Recorded with Winchester Museum.

    One of a group of items from Hampshire of early Anglo-Saxon date featuring the decorative technique of champlevé enamelling. This technique is generally rare in early (5th century) contexts and may indicate the continuation of a Roman workshop in the Solent area or in coastal northern Gaul.
