Roman Silver Mouse Statuette Holding a Nut
3RD-4TH CENTURY A.D.
1 1/2 in. (67 grams total, mouse: 38 mm long).
Modelled in the round with its tail curled on its back, a large disc held in the extended forepaws; mounted on a custom-made display stand.

Roman mosaics were made from small cubes of natural stone and terracotta possibly cut from tile or brick. Each of these small cubes was called a tessera (several tesserae) from the Latin word for dice. -
