Roman Marble Altar Top with Three Heads of Hekate

CIRCA 2ND CENTURY A.D.

4 1/4 in. (4 3/8 in.) (1.1 kg total, 10.9 cm (1.2 kg total, 11.3 cm high including stand)).

Carved in the round as three radiating female faces surrounding a central socket; three faces of the Greek goddess Hekate the goddess associated with magic, witchcraft, the night, the moon, ghosts and necromancy.

Ex J. Waring collection, 1980s onwards.

Accompanied by a Coincraft certificate of authenticity.

    The small bronze sculpture could represent the 'Night' (divinity), with the crescent moon on her head. It could have been an appliqué from a ceremonial chariot, or an appliqué for furniture or triclinium bed.
