Roman Glass Inlay, Bead and Fragment Group
1ST-4TH CENTURY A.D.
3/8 - 3/4 in. (5.48 grams total, 9-20 mm).
Comprising: a polychrome mosaic glass fragment with leaf decoration and a banded yellow rim; a white mosaic glass inlay with red and black floral motifs; an oblate bead with 'eye' motifs; a turquoise-coloured thick inlay of four fingers with white nail detailing; a blue and a yellow shoe-shaped fragment with applied bosses. Acquired on the UK art market in the 1980s. From an East Anglian private collection.
The lion brooch of flat metal in low relief shows remarkable uniformity of artistry, technique, workmanship and construction with Eagle and Hare brooches. Both categories can be dated to the 2nd century A.D. and both have typically Celtic craftsmanship within minimal simple lines. They were probably a product of Romano-British workmanship
