Roman Ceramic Pottery Mould with Hunting Scenes

2ND-3RD CENTURY A.D.

9 5/8 in. (1.3 kg total, 24.5 cm wide including stand).

Barrel-shaped mould fragment to produce low-relief moulded scenes with a group of nude males above charging horsemen and leaping animals; mounted on a custom-made stand with a specimen casting from the mould.

Provenance

From the Janner Klausner family collection by descent 1960s, London and Israel.
This lot is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D'Amato.

Exhibited at the Harwich Museum, Harwich, Essex, UK, 12th March-9th June 2025; accompanied by a copy of a photograph of the artefacts on display.

    The scene probably represents the old King Priam's plea to Achilles' son, Neoptolemus, to spare his son Polites, whom the Greek warrior is about to kill. It is made in a strong classical style with precise costume details, such as the royal diadem, the long sleeved Phrygian-type tunic and the king's belt.
