These tabulae ansatae with pointillé decoration were used for votive inscriptions to the gods, offered on the occasion of a vow made during a situation of danger or an invocation of help to the gods. They were often used in the military field. A particularly important example is the one found in Carnuntum dedicated to Jupiter Dolichenus, offered by the centurion Titius Moderatus of the Legio XI Gemina.

Acquired on the European art market, 1980s. English private collection.
This lamp belongs to the group of provincial African lamps with a plain shoulder and a heart-shaped nozzle. The shoulder form of the lamps (irrespective of African, Italic, or eastern place of manufacture or origin) varies widely. Some of them had undecorated shoulders, like our example. Discus decors include mythology, amphitheatre, daily life, animals (our example), geometric patterns and plain discus. -

Comprising a ring handle, filling-hole and air hole in lower discus; the discus with a horse advancing left mounted by a cavalryman with a flying cloak. 44 grams, 73 mm
From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000. From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.
The main charateristic of the type (Bussiere form D I 3) is the form of the nozzle, which is tangent to the lamp rim (nozzle form Bussiere 3).
