Roman Bronze Figural Lock Hasp
2ND-3RD CENTURY A.D.
2 3/4 in. (19.9 grams, 69 mm).
Formed as a herm wearing a headdress, genitalia on the column, the shoulders forming lateral lugs, remains of a suspension ring above, stepped base below and an openwork rectangular plate to the underside. [No Reserve]

Roman Rock Crystal Sleeping Dog

Carved in the round model of a recumbent canine with head resting on the forelegs; leaf-shaped ears, and deep-set eyes. 14.2 grams, 40 mm

The small rock crystal sculpture is modelled on similar figures representing sleeping hunting dogs. The subject occurs in cameos, plastic vases, as well as in lamps. These images have symbolic value, implying something of the fidelity of the dogs they depict, as well as their bravery and dependability as guardians. -

Conical vessels of this form were either used as a lamp or a beaker; notably during the late imperial period in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire and in the early Migration period. Deep cuts on this piece suggest it was used with suspension chains or ropes, making it highly likely that this example was used as a lamp.
