Roman Black-Banded Carnelian Gryllos Gemstone
1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.
1/2 in. (0.54 grams, 12 mm).
Elliptical in plan with chamfered sides, intaglio gryllos motif with head of Silenus and a helmet-wearing male (Mars?).

Acquired on the German art market, 1989-1995.

The small bronze sculpture could represent the 'Night' (divinity), with the crescent moon on her head. It could have been an appliqué from a ceremonial chariot, or an appliqué for furniture or triclinium bed.
