LOT 1040

Post Medieval Iron Sword Group

18TH-19TH CENTURY A.D.

24 1/2 - 39 in. (3.45 kg total, 62-100 cm).

Comprising military and civilian weapons: short rapier; basket hilted sword; sabre seemingly with scabbard; rapier blade. [5, No Reserve]

Provenance

Acquired 1990s-early 2000s.
East Anglian private collection.

Literature

Cf. similar swords in Farkas, T., ‘Lovassági szablyák a XVIII-XIX. Században (Cavalry sabers in the XVIII-XIX century,'in Hungarian)’ in Magyar Huszar es Katonai Hagyomanyorzo Szovetseg 2017, pp.1-10, figs.pp.7-9.

Footnotes

The two sabres, with the particular hilt and steel scabbard, seems to have affinities with Hungarian sabres of about 1837-1838, destined to staff and senior officers of the Austro-Hungarian Kingdom Hussars. At the end of the 1830s, the Austrian military leaders introduced a new type of sabre for the Hussar officers, while the 1837 infantry officer sabre was standardised.

Still-homogenous blade structure, pitting and traces of surface material losses due to the permanence in water; presence of many battle nicks on the cutting part of the blade.

The Turkish sabres from 15th century, had hilts similar to Omayyad and Abbasid's swords. The blades were long and heavy and were most probably used for swinging cuts, and were particularly convenient for point-thrusts when fighting on foot.

    Sold for (Inc. bp): £715

The blade with a tapering profile, triangular in overall form, with square shoulders, penannular guard with strong midrib, flanged hilt with straight grip, widening slightly into a fan-shaped pommel. 363 grams, 47.5 cm

Acquired from Alan Cherry, Bournemouth, UK. Ex Alexander Cotton collection, Hampshire, UK 1980s.

These types of short sword or dirks were usually cast in one piece, and the penannular rib in relief was cast on at the same time with the handle of the blade. In some cases, however, the penannular rib was later cast on the dagger, possibly to strengthen a weak point at the junction of hilt and blade. The flanged hilt was originally filled with organic material like bone.
