Post Medieval Bronze Statuette of a Nude Male
18TH-19TH CENTURY A.D. OR EARLIER
6 1/4 in. (8 in.) (321 grams, 16.2cm (421 grams total, 20.5 cm including stand)).
Modelled in the round, standing with left leg held slightly in front of the right, the right arm bent at the elbow and hand held in a gripping position forming a circular socket to accept an accessory (now absent), semi-naturalistic anatomical detailing to the torso, genitals, head and face; in the style of the Etruscan era; mounted on a custom-made display stand.

Jacobean and Cromwellian Period Glazed Ceramic Miniature Fire Guards

Each with bell-shaped socket and strap handle; one with white applied decoration including the sun with mask and two flowers with a date of 1605; the other a fragment with reconstituted elements, orange in colour with yellow slashes, star, rosette and partial date '[..]54' for 1654; one restored. 443 grams total, 15-17 cm

1605 was the year of the 'Gunpowder Plot', a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament which was foiled when, following an anonymous tip-off, Sir Thomas Knyvet, a justice of the peace, found Catholic plotter Guy Fawkes in a cellar below the Parliament building and ordered a search of the area, finding thirty six barrels of gunpowder. Fawkes was arrested for trying to kill King James I and the members who were scheduled to sit together in Parliament the next day. Fawkes spoke the legendary words: 'Remember, remember, the Fifth of November'. In 1654 Oliver Cromwell created a union between England and Scotland, with Scottish representation in the Parliament of England. -

Advancing right against a gilt background, holding a staff, an ornate nimbus composed of arcades and trefoils behind his head; label to reverse for the Serbian Republic, dated 1970. 705 grams, 34.5 cm

The painting represents a section of the Annunciation. The composition of the subject is well known from the Palaiologan paintings and from Balkan and Russian art since the 14th century A.D. The angel is advancing towards the frightened Virgin, with three fingers of the right hand raised and recalling the Trinity of God. The other hand is holding a staff, symbol of His investiture as Officer of the Heavenly Court and Archangel (Chief of the Angels).
