Rome mint; struck AD 248. 6th officina. 9th emission. Ludi Saeculares (Secular Games) issue, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Rome. IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust to right / SAECVLARES AVGG, antelope walking to left. RIC IV 161; Banti 50. Good Very Fine. Light brown patina. '5786' on reverse.(16.31gr, 27mm, 1h.).

Footnotes

Ludi Saeculares were secular games, and they were celebrated only once in a century, because it was scarcely given to a man to see them more than once in his life (in particular, the Romans reckoned a saeculum as the longest possible length of human life, either 100 or 110 years in length).

    IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Probus to right / RESTITVT ORIE-NTIS, turreted female (the Orient) standing to right, presenting wreath to emperor standing to left, holding spear. 3.56gr, 27mm, 9h.

    Condition as seen. Casting mould sharing types of different rulers.

    From the collection of a gentleman, acquired on the London art market in the 1990s.

    With an impression of the obverse on one side, and the reverse on the other, of the coin being counterfeited this ancient forger's casting mould would have been stacked with others, the molten metal being poured from above and allowed to cool.
