Persia. Achaemenid Empire, Time of Artaxerxes I to Artaxerxes II AR Siglos. Circa 450-375 BC. Sardes or subsidiary mint. Type IIIb (late).
Lydo-Milesian standard. Persian king or hero, wearing kidaris and kandys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling-running stance to right, holding transverse spear and bow / Oblong incuse punch. Carradice Type IIIb. Near Very Fine. Countermark on obverse.(5.47gr, 15mm.).

E. Cohen, in DCA, lists these bronzes as fourrée cores. In his article in The Celator, though, D. Hendin notes that the surfaces of the bronze coin he observed had no indication that it was a fourrée core, and he contends that it is an official strike in bronze. -

Basket (cista mystica), with half-open lid, from which snake coils, around, ivy wreath with fruits / Two snakes coiled around a bow case ornamented with aplustre, and containing a strung bow, between the snake heads, A above monogram of ΠΛ, civic monogram of ΠΕΡ to left, serpent-entwined staff to right.
