Medieval Silver-Gilt Iconographic Ring with Saints
15TH CENTURY A.D.
1 in. (4.86 grams, 23.55 mm overall, 18.78 mm internal diameter (approximate size British N 1/2, USA 6 3/4, Europe 14.35, Japan 13)).
The lower shank with twisted ropework detailing and beaded bands, the shoulders with raised median beaded bands developing to a horizontal ridge flanked by flowers dividing the bezel into two panels, each with a reserved standing figure: each a female saint in floor-length robe; Virgin Mary on the left panel holding an infant and St Barbara carrying a miniature tower, her attribute.

The 'Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem' was an order of knighthood under the protection of the Pope, formed around 1099 A.D. by Duke Godfrey of Bouillon, the leader of the First Crusade. It was established for the protection of pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land and was recognised by a Papal Bull in about 1113 A.D. -

The design appears to be based on the 'Maid and the Unicorn' tapestry now in the Cluny Museum, Paris, dated to circa 1500 A.D. The field of the tapestry is strewn with numerous flowers which gives the name 'millefleurs' ('thousand flowers') to the type.
