Medieval Pewter Pilgrim Badge of the Virgin Mary
CIRCA 1300 A.D.
2 1/8 in. (11.8 grams, 53 mm).
Tongue-shaped panel with chamfered rim; standing figure of Mary and infant Jesus modelled in high-relief on a hatched ground; Mary in floor-length robe wearing a crown with three lobes and holding a vessel (chrismal?) in her right hand. [No Reserve]

Found Billingsgate spoil from the Thames foreshore, London, UK.
Lucca was situated on the Via Francigena, the principal route for English pilgrims travelling to Rome. Its most treasured relic was the 'Volto Santo', (the Holy Face), a large-than-life figure of Christ crucified, the face reputedly carved by an angel. This badge is a souvenir of the Volto Santo. -
