Medieval Knight's Heraldic Horse Harness Pendant

14TH-15TH CENTURY A.D.

1 1/2 in. (3.82 grams, 39 mm).

Heater-shaped with high-relief arms of three lions rampant and an enamelled label, cadency mark for the eldest son.

Found Romney Marsh area, 2023.
Property of a Kent gentleman.

Footnotes

The arms 'three lions rampant' has been used by several families. The Dering Roll includes Willem le Genne, Nicole le Gras, and Grimbald Pauncefoot with such arms.

    Found Billingsgate spoil from the Thames foreshore, London, UK.

    Lucca was situated on the Via Francigena, the principal route for English pilgrims travelling to Rome. Its most treasured relic was the 'Volto Santo', (the Holy Face), a large-than-life figure of Christ crucified, the face reputedly carved by an angel. This badge is a souvenir of the Volto Santo.

    Found while searching with a metal detector in Bossingham, Kent, UK, by Alan John Punyer on 14 September 2000. Disclaimed under the Treasure Act with reference no. M&ME 297. Accompanied by a copy of page 61 of the Treasure Annual Report 2000, where this ring is published as number 92.
