Medieval Alabaster Weeping Mary Magdalene

From a Lamentation scene, modelled in the round with naturalistic facial features and flowing hair; Mary depicted kneeling and wearing a long tunica talaris with short sleeves; her head downcast with sorrowful expression, lips slightly parted. 4.95 kg, 33 cm

Mary was considered the former sinner par excellence who, having abandoned the path of sinful vice, returned to original purity through the light of Christ, and accompanied Jesus until the last moments, shared the pain of his death with his mother and was witness of the Resurrection. Because of this, her appearance was often that of a simple girl, with long hair that echoed the biblical account. It was believed that through devotion and prayer to images of Mary Magdalene, the viewer might, like her, regain purity and find the same redemption that she was given by Christ. -

Published Medieval Thames Pewter The Holy Face Pilgrim's Badge

Presenting relief design of Christ crucified, wearing long V-neck robe tied at the waist with a knotted girdle and with full sleeves, the sun and moon beneath his feet; stitching loops to the remaining arms, pellet border and raised lettering: 'S[IGNVM SANCTI] VV / LTI / [LV]CEN / SIS' (sign of the Holy Face of Lucca); Lucca, Italy. 5.75 grams, 5 cm
Found Billingsgate spoil from the Thames foreshore, London, UK.
Lucca was situated on the Via Francigena, the principal route for English pilgrims travelling to Rome. Its most treasured relic was the 'Volto Santo', (the Holy Face), a large-than-life figure of Christ crucified, the face reputedly carved by an angel. This badge is a souvenir of the Volto Santo.
