Medieval Gilt Bronze Mount of Saint Mark with Lion

FRENCH, 13TH-14TH CENTURY A.D.

1 3/8 in. (21.37 grams, 36 mm high).

Showing the robed saint seated on a low chair with a lion, his emblem, at his feet, originally an element from a processional cross; accompanied by a custom-made display stand.

Private collection, UK.

Literature

A similar composition can be found in a pair of gilded copper reliefs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession numbers 2012.70.1, 2012.70.2.

    The Portable Antiquities Scheme states: 'This is a find of note and has been designated: Include in MedArch.'
