4 1/2 in. (41 grams, 11.3 cm).

Shown crucified on the cross; carved in relief with semi-naturalistic anatomical detailing; remains of suspension loop to top; polished. [No Reserve]

Provenance

Ex Frederick Bligh Bond (1864-1946), the archaeologist of Glastonbury. An erroneous inscription on the reverse 'date about 1140 (Bligh Bond)'.

    Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.

    Caltrops were scattered on battlefields in an effort to stop or slow advancing enemy cavalry or foot soldiers; regardless of how a caltrop lands, one spike is always facing upwards.

    Composed of a sub-triangular-section socket, stamped to one cheek. 349 grams, 13.6 cm



    Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.

    This type of axehead, with similar specimens found in the territories of the Teutonic Order, was by far the most popular form of axe which remains unchangeable and continues to be used in the Baltic to this day. It appears in East European territories as early as the mid 13th century A.D.
