Medieval Bronze Knight's Holy Sepulchre Badge

CIRCA 13TH-14TH CENTURY A.D.

1 1/4 in. (0.75 grams, 17.78 mm).

Formed as a cross-crosslet, the symbol of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, with punched-point border. [No Reserve]

Provenance

Found whilst searching with a metal detector near Eynsham, Oxfordshire, UK, before 1996.

The 'Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem' was an order of knighthood under the protection of the Pope, formed around 1099 AD by Duke Godfrey of Bouillon, the leader of the First Crusade. It was established for the protection of pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land and was recognised by a Papal Bull in about 1113 AD.

    From the private collection of a London gentleman, from his grandfather's collection formed before the early 1970s.

    P. Žákovský has been able to classify medieval caltrops, mainly from 13th to 15th century A.D., on the basis of their morphology, into four main typologies, each with different variants. Caltrops with single-pointed spikes, whose interpretation, however, is often ambiguous belong to type I. The other three types represent classic four-pointed caltrops, and individual types in this group differ from one another just in their cross-section.
