Rome mint; struck AD 161. IMP CAES M AVREL ANTONINVS AVG P M, laureate head to right, with slight drapery over shoulders / CONCORD AVGVSTOR TR P XV, Marcus Aurelius, togate, on the left, and Lucius Verus, togate, on the right, standing facing each other and clasping their right hands, each holding a scroll in his left hand; S C across fields, COS III in exergue. RIC III 795-797 var. (bust type); Cohen 45-47 var. (same). Very Fine. Tooled. Very rare bust type.(26.55gr, 33mm, 12h.).

    Condition as seen. Casting mould sharing two reverse types.

    From the collection of a gentleman, acquired on the London art market in the 1990s.

    With an impression of the obverse on one side, and the reverse on the other, of the coin being counterfeited this ancient forger's casting mould would have been stacked with others, the molten metal being poured from above and allowed to cool.
