Lion attacking to right, biting into the hindquarter of bull kneeling to left and biting the leg of the lion; Θ above, three ground lines below, the middle composed of pellets; stylised acanthus flower ιn exergue / Quadripartite incuse square. Desneux 59 (D57)(?); AMNG III/2, 5; HGC 3, 383. Near Extremely Fine. Nicely toned with golden iridescence around the devices on obverse.(17.19gr, 27mm.).

Extremely Fine. Attractively toned with hints of blue iridescence around the devices on obverse.

Teos came under the rule of the Achaemenids, when Cyrus II (559-529 BC) was king. The occupation by the Persians led to the exodus of a large part of the population of Teos, between 545 and 540 BC, to Thrace, where they participated in the rebuilding of the city of Abdera. The two cities struck similar silver coins with the depiction of the griffin, seated on the right for Teos and on the left for Abdera. -
