Luristan Bronze Horse Harness Cheekpiece
11TH-8TH CENTURY B.C.
5 1/4 in. (130 grams, 13.5 cm wide).
In the form of a righthand side bar, surmounted by two loops for additional straps, ending in a lion's head at the front, the other extremity bending outwards and ending with a conical tip, remains of the iron bar visible on the sides; once belonging to an articulate bit.
ProvenanceAcquired mid 1980s to early 1990s.

FootnotesThe association of Psalia in the shape of a bar and with an articulated bit is documented in Assyria, in Media and in central Iran starting from the 10th century B.C., but the zoomorphic elements of this specimen suggest that it was produced in Luristan. The use of articulated bits, which moved inside the horse's mouth, exerting a minimal pressure on the reins, allowed for better control of the mount.

Luristan Bronze Sword

Of type II with crescentic pommel, the grip with V-shaped collar and penannular guard, blade with a broad, raised midrib. 684 grams, 56 cm
Ex Abelita family collection, 1988.
The crescentic pommel and the penannular guard were probably cast in a one piece-mould. These kinds of pommels are typical of the iron swords of type 2 from Luristan. A certain number of Luristan daggers and swords have bronze or iron blades with cast-on bronze hilts. The typology of winged pommel bronze grip is visible on examples in the British Museum and the National Museum of Iran. -

The spearhead belongs to type 2 of spearheads according to the classification of Khorasani. A similar specimen was excavated by Negahban in Marlik. -

The rectangular fragment with repoussé leaf borders, the outer scene composed of advancing warriors on horseback, each rider holding a round shield and a quiver of arrows on his back, a horned animal and a rosette to the right; the central scene with a winged human-headed bull flanking a tree, possibly a pomegranate tree or a tree of life; the lower edge pierced for attachment. 41 grams, 12 cm wide
