Late Roman Gold Ring with Facing Birds
CIRCA 5TH-7TH CENTURY A.D.
1 in. (14.42 grams, 24.86 mm overall, 17.53 mm internal diameter (approximate size British P 1/2, USA 7 3/4, Europe 16.86, Japan 16)).
With a heavy round-section hoop thickened at the base, lentoid bezel with ropework border and two opposing cockerels. [No Reserve]

Believed to have been acquired at Christie's.
Property of a North American gallery.

A mosaic found in Cirenchester (insula IX, Chester Street) shows panels defined by a dark blue-grey single fillet with an additional double fillet parallel to it on a longer axis, having an overall scheme of running pelta-pattern. Each pelta is outlined in dark-blue grey and infilled with red, white and dark blue grey at the centre. -

Often the statues of puttos or amorini (small loves) depicting personifications of Eros were covered with gold leaf. This was a frequent practice and the figures, when represented with wings, were known as chrysopteroi, meaning 'with golden wings'.
