Large Pre-Columbian Terracotta Head
NYARIT, POSSIBLY 200 B.C.-200 A.D.
5 1/8 in. (412 grams, 13 cm).
Hollow-formed and modelled in the round with elaborate ear-decorations and raised band to the brow; with attached tag: 'pre Columbian / ceramic / West Coast / Mexico / Nyarit / 200 BC - 200 AD / 60.oo'; and to verso: 'From the estate of John Dewar / curator of the LA county / Museum of / Natural History'. [No Reserve]
Provenance
From the old private Pre-Columbian collection of a retired UK gentleman; his collection formed in the 1990s from much earlier collections.
Previously acquired from the private collection of Wayne Leicht, who acquired the specimens from the estate sale of John Dewar, a previous curator at the Southwest Museum, William S. Hart Museum, and Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
