Large Medieval Gold Ring with Cabochon Garnet

13TH CENTURY A.D.

1 1/8 in. (6.19 grams, 28.88 mm overall, 20.15 mm internal diameter (approximate size British S, USA 9, Europe 20, Japan 19)).

With slender hoop, octagonal bezel with scooped profile, inset garnet cabochon at the apex.

Provenance

Acquired on the European art market in the 1990s.
UK collection of a European gentleman.

This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12296-219624.

    During the medieval period the use of seals on documents, letters and packages became widespread. Lead was cheap to use and easy to engrave, and from the late 12th until the end of 13th century seals of this type, with very conventional central designs, were important possessions amongst the lower classes.

    Found whilst searching with a metal detector near Eynsham, Oxfordshire, UK, before 1996.

    The 'Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem' was an order of knighthood under the protection of the Pope, formed around 1099 AD by Duke Godfrey of Bouillon, the leader of the First Crusade. It was established for the protection of pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land and was recognised by a Papal Bull in about 1113 AD.
