Large Chinese Wei Terracotta Soldier with Shield
NORTHERN WEI DYNASTY, 386-534 A.D. OR LATER
12 1/8 in. (1.4 kg, 31 cm high).
Hollow-formed, modelled in the round, warrior wearing lamellar armour to chest, back and upper arms, helmet with side-flaps, padded skirt and broad leggings; left hand resting on a long hexagonal shield with midrib, right hand modelled open to accept a spear of shafted weapon.

Modelled standing on a rectangular base, wearing a harness adorned with pendants and an 'animal skin' saddlecloth; the rider modelled seated in the saddle, arms held before the body, gesturing to hold reins (absent); semi-naturalistic anatomical detailing to both figures; extensive remains of polychrome pigmentation. 3.65 kg, 41 cm high
