Ellipsoid panel with polychrome landscape scene depicting a fowler in the foreground holding his left arm extended for a perching bird of prey wearing a hood; the fowler in slashed doublet and hose with turned boots standing before an oak tree; in the middle distance, two figures sitting in the grass, the female playing a lute and the male gesticulating, and a third riding with arm raised releasing a hawk; in the distance, wooded hills with a castle; inked title 'Maiŭs' (May); lead came with two suspension loops; cracked and repaired. 266 grams, 23.7 cm

With barrel-shaped baluster and single-edged ferrous blade, the handle formed as a rearing lion supporting a pavise with its knees and forepaws, with scale-effect mane, pierced mouth holding a suspension ring; a rare type. 42.9 grams, 88 mm

Comprising six adult- and child-sized pattens, each a ring with extended tongue fitted with rivets to secure the ring to a wooden platform; some in a glazed wooden fabric-lined display case with labels and explanatory text, one with reproduction wooden sole and leather upper showing how the patent is attached. 6.05 kg total, 11.5-81 cm

Iron pattens first came into use probably in 17th century A.D., and gained popularity during the first half of that century. The original design of the patten was as one piece of shaped wood attached beneath the sole of the shoe; this evolved into to a wooden platform attached to the underside of an iron ring. The pattens were thus forerunners of the Wellington boot which came into use in the 19th century A.D.
