Kingdom of Macedon, Antigonos I Monophthalmos, as strategos of Asia, AR Drachm. Struck circa 310-301 BC. Kolophon mint. In the name and types of Alexander III.

Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied beneath chin / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated to left on backless throne, right leg drawn back, his feet resting on low foot rest, holding long sceptre in his left hand and, in his right, eagle standing to right with closed wings; ΛΕΙ (partially ligate) in left field and monogram of TI beneath throne. Price 1783. Near Very Fine.(4.08gr, 17mm, 12h.).

    The method of casting this unique type of coin was adopted by the Gallic Celts, who originally came from this region. Dolphins were generally struck in the form of a tree attached to the tail, although some examples appear to have been cast individually.
