Jacobean Painted Wooden Figure
17TH CENTURY A.D.
10 1/4 in. (245 grams, 26 cm high).
Carved in the round, gesso-covered wooden image of Virgin Mary with hands held before the chest in prayer, standing on a crescent base with wings and mask of a putto at her feet; traces of gilding to the hem of her mantle. [No Reserve]

Acquired by the vendor's father on the UK art market, before 1990.
Naser al-Din Shah Qajar was the fourth Shah of Qajar, and the third longest reigning ruler in Iranian history. He was assassinated in Tehran on 1st May 1896. He is known for being the first modern Persian monarch to have formally visited Europe and to have written about his travels in his memoirs. -
