Italic Black Ware Vessel Group

6TH-4TH CENTURY B.C.

3 3/4 - 4 3/8 in. (534 grams total, 9.4-11.2 cm).

Comprising: biconical cup with carinated profile, flared rim and strap handle; similar with rounded underside and lugs to the equator; jar with trumpet-shaped mouth and lateral loops. [3, No Reserve]

From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000.
From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.

    Carved in the round; semi-naturalistic anatomic and facial detailing, hair gathered loosely at the neck and tied with a taenia knotted at the nape of the neck; mounted on a custom-made display base. 879 grams total, 18 cm high including stand



    Ex old European private property, by inheritance to the previous owner. Ex Schuler Auktionen, Zürich, 10 December 2020, no.1211. Accompanied by an academic report by Dr Raffaele D’Amato. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.11817-206512.

    The small statuette to which the head belonged was probably that of a naked youth, the so-called kouros, typical of archaic Greek sculpture from the 7th century B.C. onwards.

    Modelled in the round figure of Hercle (Roman Hercules, Greek Herakles) standing nude with the lionskin mantle draped over his extended left forearm, the right arm bent and fist raised (originally holding a club); the hair cut short and radiating from the crown of the head, lentoid eyes flanking a snub nose; mounted on a custom-made stand. 87 grams total, 77 mm (10.2 cm high including stand)



    From the estate of Eldert Bontekoe (1954-2020). Ex Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000. with Artemis Gallery, Colorado, USA, 26 December 2020, no.8. Property of a South Australian private collector, with collection reference 20.38. Accompanied by an original Artemis Gallery certificate of authenticity dated 27 January 2021. Accompanied by detailed collector's catalogue pages including description and photograph.
