ΜΕΝΤΩΡ (Mentor), magistrate. Griffin seated to right, right forepaw raised / ΤΗΙ ΜΕΝΤΩ[Ρ], chelys. Kinns 95 var. (magistrate's name downward to left). Extremely Fine. Attractively toned with hints of blue iridescence around the devices on obverse.(0.92gr, 10mm, 12h.).

Teos came under the rule of the Achaemenids, when Cyrus II (559-529 BC) was king. The occupation by the Persians led to the exodus of a large part of the population of Teos, between 545 and 540 BC, to Thrace, where they participated in the rebuilding of the city of Abdera. The two cities struck similar silver coins with the depiction of the griffin, seated on the right for Teos and on the left for Abdera.

Struck under Brogitaros. Laureate head of Zeus to right / TAYIΩN, eagle alighting to right on thunderbolt, wings spread, sceptre with diadem behind shoulder; piloi of Dioscuri surmounted by star flanking; monogram of MHTP or MATP in right field. The sceptre behind the eagle on reverse is a symbol, which was regularly given by the Senate to client-kings for their elevated position. The sceptre with this monogram link the bronze issue with the royal silver of Brogitaros. -
