Hellenistic Terracotta Goddess Figure

CIRCA 2ND CENTURY B.C.-1ST CENTURY A.D.

5 3/8 in. (155 grams total, 13.7 cm including stand).

Modelled in the half-round on a tongue-shaped plaque, with right hand in the folds of the robe and left hand holding the hem; mounted on a custom-made stand. [No Reserve]

Provenance

From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000.
From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.

    The plain red polished ware was dominant in Cyprus in the early Bronze Age. It included jugs with nipple base, cutaway sprout, and paired, blunt projections near handle attachment points.

    According to Howland, this type (33A), attested in the Athenian Agora during a period from the last quarter of the third century B.C. to the third quarter of the second century, is not well defined: ‘Its forms are irregular, not following a definite set pattern’. Specimens are also recorded in Magna Graecia (Paestum).
