Greek Terracotta Siren Vessel
RHODIAN, CIRCA 550–500 B.C.
7 in. (341 grams, 18 cm).
A mould-made vessel with the body of a bird and the head of youthful female with her head turned right, hair arranged in long plaits falling on her shoulders, small lug on the back, the body resting on stylised legs tucked beneath the body.

The category of this mirror is similar to those of the Cesnola collection, from Cyprus at the Metropolitan Museum. They consist of heavy circular disks, provided with low cylindrical rims. They were made in pairs, and polished respectively on the recessed and flat sides. The unpolished sides were ornamented with concentric-circle ornaments and concentric mouldings. -
