Acquired 1960s-1990s.
From the late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister.
Literature
Cf. similar example in Metropolitan Museum, accession no. 74.51.2424, with the name of other manufacturer; cf. Grace, V., ‘Stamped Amphora handles found in 1931-1932’ in Hesperia, 3, 1934, pp.197-310, for hundreds of similar examples.
Footnotes
The legend of the stamp usually comprises three elements, in full or abbreviated form: a) the name of a magistrate whose purpose was to date the amphora. In our case possibly Θράσωνος b) the name of the “fabricant” (manufacturer), who played a part in the production of the amphora (here SATYROS), c) ethnic element indicating the production’s place (maybe, here, associated with the the Θ of Θράσωνος, Knidos).
